NIGERIAN Army commanders have warned of a renewed threat from Boko Haram after it emerged that the terrorist sect is planning to poising water supplies across the northeast of the country.
Despite being recently dislodged from many of its strongholds in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa State States, Boko Haram has shown remarkable resilience and refused to be beaten. It still carries out suicide bombing attacks and mounts daring raids on villages and towns in Borno State, killing dozens of people.
Warning that worse may still come from the sect, Major Joseph Afolasade, the assistant director of army public relations at the 33 Artillery Brigade in Bauchi, warned of a fresh plot to poison water supplies. He described the threat by the fleeing Boko Haram insurgents as a sign of desperation on their part and called on the people in the northeast to always be vigilant.
Major Afolasade said: “The command wishes to inform the general public that Boko Haram terrorists plan to buy a large quantity of rat poison and other poisonous items from markets in Nigeria to enable them poison water sources, particularly in the north-eastern states. The Nigerian Army Theatre Command, therefore calls on the general public, particularly the market men and women vending such items to be vigilant.
He also urged citizens of the region to report any person buying large quantities of food commodities to security agencies. Yesterday, Boko Haram detonated a bomb in the Adamawa State capital Yola, killing dozens of worshippers in a mosque.
Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has indicated his interest in increased bilateral ties between Nigeria and Hungary in the areas of insecurity and agricultural development. Speaking when he received Zsolt Semjen, the vice prime minister of Hungary at the presidential villa, President Buhari said cooperation between the two countries was necessary because they have a lot in common.
