PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has allocated portfolios to 36 ministers today after the swearing in of his nominees this morning with a few surprises that included former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi being given the transport brief.
Keeping commentators guessing, President Buhari kept the list close to his chest until this morning and caught many people by surprise when he published it. Former Lagos State governor Babatunde Fashola becomes the minister for power, works and housing, while the ex-Ekiti State governor Kayode Fayemi gets the solid minerals portfolio.
There were several other surprises with former chief of army staff Lt General Abdulrahman Dambazau widely expected to be named defence minister got the internal affairs portfolio. Retired Brigadier Dan Ali was named defence minister, while Pastor Usani Uguru was named as the minister of Niger Delta Affairs.
There were a few appointments that went as expected with Chief Audu Ogbeh named agriculture minister and Ibe Nwachukwu appointed minister of state for petroleum. However, there was a shock appointment in the foreign ministry with Geoffrey Onyema named foreign minister ahead of the widely tipped Kayode Fayemi.
Having been sworn-in and named, the ministers are due to hold their first meeting today. President Buhari will preside over the first federal executive council meeting of his tenure at the presidential villa later this afternoon.
