Premiership sides Newcastle and Sunderland look to sign Obafemi Martins on loan

altSUPER Eagles striker Obafemi Martins could be on the way back to the English Premiership soon as his former club Newcastle United and their northeast rivals Sunderland have both made enquiries about signing him on loan.

Currently playing in the American Major Soccer League (MLS) for Settle Sounders, Martins, played for Newcastle for three years between 2006 and 2009. From there, he moved to Birmingham City, winning the FA Cup with them before leaving England for the US.

In good form at the moment, in three seasons in the MLS with the Seattle Sounders, Martins has scored 40 goals and registered 23 assists. His great goal-scoring streak has earned him a recall to the Super Eagles with coach Sunday Oliseh inviting him for Nigeria's last game against Swaziland.

At the moment, the MLS is on its off season and the two Premiership clubs are looking to see if they can bring Martins to England on loan during the window.  Newcastle have been goal shy this season and manager Steve McClaren is keen to bring Martins back to St. James’ Park to address the problem.

Current Sunderland manager, Sam Allardyce, who brought former eagles skipper Austin JJ Okocha to England, worked with Martins during his spell at Newcastle and is well aware of his talent. Involved in a relegation dogfight at the foot of the table, Sunderland too are desperate to boost their attack.
