Southeast governors resolve to meet Buhari and dialogue with Massob and Ipob over Biafra

altSTATE governors from across the southeast have set up a committee to meet President Muhammadu Buhari and to dialogue with the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (Massob) and the Indigenous People of Biafra (Ipob).

Over the last month, separatists calling for the recreation of Biafra have been organising demonstrations across Igboland, campaigning for secession from Nigeria. Their protests were sparked by the arrest of Radio Biafra director Nnamdi Kanu who was apprehended by security agents upon his arrival in Lagos from the UK.

Last weekend, the five governors from the southeastern states met in Enugu to discuss a way of resolving the crisis that has attracted thousands of Igbo youth. Following their meeting, they agreed to establish a committee to dialogue with Massob, Ipob and the federal government as a way of resolving the crisis.

After the meeting, Imo State governor Rochas Okorocha, said a delegation of the elders from the southeast geo-political zone was mandated to meet with President Buhari to address the issues facing the region. These he said include the poor state of infrastructure in the zone, the marginalization of Ndigbo in the current federal dispensation and other matters that affect the economic development of Igboland.

In addition, the governors also resolved to set up a committee to take a critical look at the leadership tussle in Ohanaeze N’digbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural association. They will also set up an economic advisory committee to harness the economic potentials of the geo-political zone.

Over the weekend, Ohanaeze leaders and  professionals from the southeast and  south-south also yesterday met with a section of Massob and Ipob and noted the demand of pro-Biafra for  the release of the director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, currently in detention. Asking both bodies to maintain peace, Ohaneze resolved to convene a meeting of the Ime Obi, its inner caucus to discuss the current situation in Igboland.
