Delays in riverine Southern Ijaw Local Government Area hold up Bayelsa election result

altNIGERIA'S Independent National Electoral Commission (Inec) has been prevented from announcing the results of the governorship election in Bayelsa State due to difficulties in getting ballot papers back from the riverine Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.

Over Saturday, Bayelsans went to the polls to elect a new governor in what was a tight two-horse race between Governor Seriake Dickson of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and his predecessor Chief Timipre Sylva of the All Progressives Congress (APC).  So far, Inec has announced results from six local government areas of Brass, Yenagoa, Sagbama, Ogbia, Kolokuma/Opokuma  and Ekeremor with Governor Dickson leading by 25,415 votes.

Governor Dickson has won five of the six local government areas declared so far, garnering a total of 81,929 votes, while Chief Timipre Sylva got a total of 56,514 votes. Chief Sylva won only in Brass Local Government Area where he comes from, getting 21,755 votes, while Governor Dickson got 6,516 votes.

Apart from winning 28,934 votes in Sagbama where he comes from, Governor Dickson also won big by 24,258 votes in Yenagoa, the state capital. Chief Sylva got 5,382 votes in Sagbama and 14,563 votes in Yenagoa, while in Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area, Governor Dickson had 7,619 votes, while Chief Sylva had 6,896 votes.

In Ekeremor, Governor Dickson had 14,602 votes, while Chief Sylva got 7,918, while in Ogbia, Governor Dickson, polled a total of 13,051 votes against the 9,106 votes of Chief Sylva. However, Inec has not been able to declare the results as expected due to problems in getting results from the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area.

Professor Zana Akpagu, Inec's chief returning officer in Bayesla State, said the results from the local government area which is located deep down in the riverine community, is still being awaited. He added that he does not know when the returning officer from the local government area will come in with the result.
