SENATOR Shehu Sani the lawmaker representing the Kaduna North Senatorial District in the upper chamber has joined the growing number of politicians using the festive period as a time to help the ill by clearing the medical bill of 40 patients on admission in hospital.
Over the weekend, the highly outspoken senator, who was recently controversially suspended from the Kaduna State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), paid the medical bills of the patients on admission at Saint Gerard Catholic Hospital, Kaduna. He paid a get-well visit to patients in the hospital and while there also gave them presents, as well as cleared their bills.
Senator Sani said: “I will use the opportunity of this visit to write off the medical bills 40 patients in this hospital, and also to write off bills of those that are in the emergency ward now. I will work it out with the management of this hospital to see the bills so as to effect immediate payment.”
He further disclosed that, he is presently working on a bill that will make the poorest of the poor Nigerians to benefit from the National Health Insurance Scheme. According to Senator Sani, said the programme would not only be for workers and the employed and emphasised that it was imperative for every Nigerians to benefit from any programme of the government without discrimination.
Of late, Senator Sani has been a big critic of Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, condemning the governor for criticising those who opposed his appointments and castigating him for organising the recent Kaduna Carnival. Senator Sani accused the governor of being insensitive to the plight of the Kaduna people by organising a music festival as the country faces economic and security challenges.
In a letter sent to Senator Sani dated December 27, the chapter of the party said that they were suspending the senator for a period of 11 months and that, henceforth, he is not to partake in APC party activities in Kaduna State. However, several of those whose names appeared on the letter have denied writing it, claiming their signatures were forged.
Senator Sani joins the likes of Governor Umaru Al-Makura of Nasarawa State, who have used the festive period as an opportunity to visit the sick in hospital and clear their hotel bills. At Christmas, President Muhammadu Buhari's wife Aisha, also visited a centre for HIV/Aids in Abuja, to give patients presents.
