POLICE in Lagos State have arrested 59-year-old landlady Olayinka Ayinda after she carried out an audacious act of bunkering by connecting a Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) oil pipeline to her private residence granting easy access to crude.
In what has to be the most brazen act of oil theft so far, Ms Ayinda connected a pipe inside her private water well to the NNPC pipeline and has been siphoning petrol illegally for the past three years. She has been arrested and detained at the Idimu Division for vandalising the NNPC pipeline in Isheri Olofin area of Lagos State.
Apparently, the incident happened at KML 1, Lasu Road, Iyana Odo bus stop in Isheri Olofin, a Lagos suburb. However, it was discovered by officers of the Anti-Vandalism Intelligence Unit Team B set up by the inspector general of police Solomon Arase after they were tipped off.
Ms Ayinde allegedly admitted after her arrest that for the past three years, vandals has been operating in her house and she reported them to the NNPC officials but they did not do anything about it. She denied her involvement in the act and said she made the mistake of not informing the police because she relied on the NNPC who asked her not to worry.
According to Ms Ayinde, NNPC officials used to come with a team and she did not ask to know whether they were really officers or not. At the house, which has now been taken over by armed officers, some Jerry cans used for storing scooped petrol were all over the premises.
Ms Ayinde is still detained at the police station where she has provided investigators with a written statement. Police sources said she might be flown to Abuja for further interrogation given the severity of the offence.
