Six serving generals handed over to EFCC for their roles in Dasukigate arms scandal

altSIX serving generals in the Nigerian Army and one retired one have been handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) by the military authorities for their role in the Dasukigate arms scandal.

Over recent months, investigations have shown that several leading military commanders were involved in the $2.1bn Dasukigate scandal in which money meant for equipping the military was diverted into private pockets. Apart from the fact that former national security adviser Col Sambo Dasuki, handed out cash to government officials and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) apparatchiks, military officers are also accused of corrupt practices.

Yesterday, the army decided to act on information at its disposal by handing over the seven indicted generals to EFCC officials for further investigation. Colonel Sani Usman, the acting director of army public relations, said the officers sent to anti-graft agency for investigation included three serving major generals and one retired one, three brigadiers, four colonels and one lieutenant colonel.

Colonel Usman did not reveal the names of officers but it one of those affected is Col Ojogbane Adegbe, former president Dr Goodluck Jonathan's aide camp. According to Col Usman, the investigation being carried out by EFCC will not deter the military from conducting its own probe of officers.

He added that at the end of the EFCC investigations, if the officers were found culpable, they will still be tried by a military court martial. Last year, President Muhammadu Buhari set up a panel to investigate the utilisation of funds budgeted for purchase of arms from 2007 till date and it has so far found out that many officers have cases to answer.
