SECURITY officials have arrested a female Boko Haram suicide bomber in the town of Dikwa who developed cold feet and took off her vest of explosives just before she was due to attack a refugee camp.
Of late, Boko Haram has increasingly resorted to the use of young girls as suicide bombers, who it arms with vests packed with explosives. In this particular instance, a young girl was strapped with explosives and asked to go and attack an internal displaced persons (IDP) camp in Dikwa in Borno State.
At the last moment, the suicide bomber ripped off her vest to avoid taking part in the attack and was subsequently arrested by soldiers guarding the facility. Two others with her, however, walked into the middle of hundreds of people lining up for food before blowing themselves up in an attack that killed 58 and wounded several others.
According to eyewitnesses, the third bomber, aged about 14, confessed that she had been recruited to carry out the bombing. She added that she was scared because she knew she would kill people and then proceeded to give officials information about other planned Boko Haram bombings.
