Former chief of defence staff Alex Badeh creates a stir at Kuje Prison as he breezes in

altFORMER chief of defence staff Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh has illuminated the atmosphere within Kuje Prison in Abuja after storming into the facility over the weekend to the amusement of other inmates who could not believe they were seeing in.

About a year ago, Marshal Badeh was one of the most powerful men in Nigeria and his sudden fall from grace after he was arrested in connection with corruption charges, has created a stir in security circles. Kuje Prison inmates were full of excitement and curiosity when he was led into the facility yesterday amid a lot of fanfare.

Marshall Badeh created further curiosity when he rejected food from the prison and opted to feed himself pending the time he would perfect his bail conditions. One prison source said source said that upon arrival, his bio-data and other important details were taken before he was escorted to the prison officer’s office and allocated a cell.

He added: “An inmate can reject prison food and sign for self-feeding, meaning he would provide his own food. His family members and friends can bring food for him daily, subject to the approval of the prison authorities.”

It is believed that Marshal Badeh’s rejection of the prison food may not be unconnected with the poor quality of the food served inmates in Nigerian prisons. Peter Ezenwa, the comptroller-general of the Nigeria Prisons Service, amazed the nation last month when he said that a paltry sum of N222.30k was budgeted by the service to feed each inmate per day.
