POLICE have arrested a man identified as Inneh Aisosa at the Delta State University (Delsu) in Abraka for impersonation after he sat an examination in place of his girlfriend in the department of mechanical engineering.
His girlfriend Onakpoma Oghenetega, a 400 Level student at Delsu, has also been arrested and they are both expected to be arraigned in court soon. Mr Aisosa is said to be a mechanical engineering student himself at the Federal University of Petroleum Resources in Effurun, also in Delta State.
According to Delsu spokesman Eddy Agbure, Mr Aisosa with matriculation number 0452/2010, came into the university in a Toyota Camry with registration number ABH 417 GW to write the exam for Ms Oghenetega with matriculation number FOS/12/13/212931. However, he was apprehended by members of the Delsu Examination Monitoring Group in collaboration with invigilators.
Mr Agbure said: “With this development, it is obvious that some of our unserious-minded students have introduced new tactics to perpetrate examination malpractice. While law abiding and committed students of the university are busy reading very hard for their examinations, the lazy ones are busy engaging mercenaries from within and outside the university to write examinations for them with the sole aim of getting good grades.
“This is totally unacceptable and management of the university will not relax in the relentless was against this academic fraud. We the university authorities vow to deal with criminally-minded students in the war against examination malpractices."
Now widespread across Nigeria, examination malpractices have taken ion a new dimension with even lecturers writing exams for students. Some students pass through the university without even sitting exams at all.
