POLICE in Ogun State have arrested private school teacher Edet Umoren for beheading the granddaughter of his proprietor Pastor Joseph Olitoye in anger over the fact that he is owed two month's salary arrears.
In one of the most horrific cases even known in the state, Mr Umoren committed the bizarre crime in Esugbo, Itamerin near Ijebu-Ife in Ijebu East Local Government Area of Ogun State. He apparently beheaded the10-year-old pupil, Precious Adedeji of Favour Nursery and Primary School because Pastor Olitoye owed him N8,000 (£38.10), for his January and February salaries.
According to the police, Mr Umoren, also severed off the right hand of the 10-year-old girl after seizing and dragging her into a nearby bush, a day after her birthday. Mr Umoren, who was also the treasurer of the school proprietor’s church, was alleged to have seized Precious when she and her friend, Patricia, were returning to the school from where they had gone to buy biscuits.
Patricia, it was learnt, escaped from the scene and ran back to the school premises to inform the proprietor of the attack by whom she called Uncle Edet. Apparently, the proprietor said he had pleaded with Mr Umoren to exercise patience till the end of this week to enable him to pay the salaries owed him.
Pastor Olitoye disclosed that Mr Umoren left two short notes at the scene of the crime, claiming that he killed the girl because of the failure of the proprietor to pay him his two months’ salaries of N8,000. It is also alleged that the assailant had stolen over N250,000 (£881) from the church’s fund.
Distraught Pastor Olitoye said he had planned to terminate the appointment of the teacher on Friday, which made him to issue him a query before he committed the crime. Confirming the incident, the Ogun State Police Command spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi, said Mr Umoren had been arrested.
