RESIDENTS of the Nze community in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State have taken to their heels and fled the area amid report that armed Fulani herdsmen planned to launch an attack on them.
Earlier this month, Fulani herdsmen invaded Ukpabi-Nimbo community in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State armed to the teeth with AK47 rifles and carried out a gruesome attack leading to the death of 48 people. Amid rumours that a similar commando-style attack was planned on Nze, local people have gathered their emergency possessions and fled.
One local resident living in Abuja said: “I just received a frightening report that Fulani herdsmen have planned to invade my community, Nze in Udi Local Government Area. I therefore call on the police in Enugu State to rise up to this grave security challenge to avert a repeat of Ukpabi Nimbo.
“My community is deserted, as women, children and the elderly have been moved to Enugu and neighbouring communities of Aku, Affa and Egede. I am deeply pained by this terrible news and urge all Nigerians to stand with my people in prayers and defence of our land.”
One other resident who fled, said that a Fulani man known as Alhaji Shimo, who has been terrorising the whole of Udi North is well known and connected with the Ninth Mile police station. He added that Alhaji Shimo, who is suspected to be behind the planned assault, boasts that he had lived over 40 years in Enugu State and that he cannot live any other place.
Apparently, Alhaji Shimo has a band of local thugs who indulge in rape, physical attack and the destruction of farm lands. A meeting has been scheduled for today between the police, the local communities, Alhaji Shimo and his children, who were alleged to have made the threat.
