NFF excuse Mikel and Musa from Mali and Luxemburg friendlies to play in Yobo testimonial

altSUPER Eagles skipper Mikel Obi and his deputy Ahmed Musa have been excused from Nigeria's two friendlies planned against Mali and Luxemburg coming up soon to enable them participate in Joseph Yobo's testimonial game.

Nigeria's second most capped player ever, Yobo, retired from international football after the last World Cup and will be honoured with a testimonial game originally planned for the Rivers State capital Port Harcourt. African super stars like Samuel Eto'o and Yaya Toure are also expected at the event tagged The Joseph Yobo Centenary Game being put together by the Joseph Yobo Foundation in partnership with the Rivers State government.

However, Nigeria has a friendly game against Mali in Rouen in France on May 27, followed by a match against Luxemburg on June 1. Now, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has decided to allow Mikel and Musa be part of the Joseph Yobo Testimonial Game, meaning they will not be in camp for the two friendlies.

NFF general secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi, said: “The NFF leadership has decided that Mikel and Musa should be excused from the two friendly matches in Europe so that they can honour Joseph Yobo, who is having his testimonial game on the same Friday, 27th May that we are playing Mali in Rouen, France. The two players have been communicated accordingly.”

Yobo’s testimonial, to which he has invited several players from outside the country as well as Super Eagles’ players of his generation, has now been moved from Port Harcourt to the magnificent Akwa Ibom Stadium, Uyo. As a replacement for Mikel, Super Eagles coach Salisu Yusuf has extended an invitation to Morocco-based midfielder Babatunde Michael, to join the squad for the two friendly matches against Mali and Luxembourg.
