NFF fined $5,000 for failing to control the crowd at African Nations Cup qualifier in Kaduna

altNIGERIA has been fined a sum of $5,000 by the Confederation of African Football (Caf) for failing to endangering the lives of supporters during a recent African Cup of Nations qualifier against Egypt at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna.

On March 27, the Super Eagles clashed with the Pharaohs of Egypt at the Kaduna stadium in a match that ended in a 1-1 draw. However, the lives of fans were put at risk as an estimated 40,000 fans attended the game at the stadium which was designed to hold just 16,000 between and 20,000 spectators.

Due to the severe overcrowding, many fans had to climb up electric poles, rooftops, floodlights and trees just to get a glimpse of the game. Caf has subsequently decided to fine the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) for failing to control the crowd and breaching health and safety regulations.

The fine was one of several sanctions handed out by Caf’s disciplinary committee on Monday as even Egypt was fined the same amount for the excessive use of lasers in the return leg against Nigeria in Alexandria four days later. Nigeria was also warned of further sanctions if similar incident occurs.

DR Congo, Sudan, Comoros, Gambia and Kenya were also sanctioned. Kenya was hit with a $10,000 fine because its players severely contested the referee's decisions and supporters threw stones, forcing the police to use tear gas to disperse the crowd.
