ENGLISH Premiership side Chelsea has confirmed that it will be retaining the services of Super Eagles trio Mikel Obi, Victor Moses and Kenneth Omeruo over the forthcoming 2016/17 season.
Mikel, who has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge several times, regained his regular starting place under interim manager Guus Hiddink last season. Moses and Omeruo spent last season on loan at West Ham and Kasimpasa in the Turkish league respectively.
It remains to be seen if any of the Super Eagles players will be part of new manager Antonio Conte’s plans in the forthcoming season. Other players with Nigerian heritage retained in the Chelsea team include Dominic Ayodele Solanke, Ugbo Ike and Tomori Fikayo, while Olu Aina is in negotiations over a new deal.
Meanwhile, Victor Moses might be excluded from Nigeria’s squad to this year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, as a corrective measure. Moses opted out of last month’s friendly matches against Mali and Luxembourg, which did not impress senior officials at the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
Moses had been pencilled down as one of the three over-aged players on Samson Siasia’s provisional list for the Olympics but he could now be left out. One NFF official said that Moses is a repeat offender and his actions have not gone unnoticed.
“It is as I said before, his withdrawal from those games against Mali and Luxembourg made us unhappy and it wasn’t the first time he was doing it. Now his name is on the Olympic Games list but I’m not sure he will make it because we need to take some corrective measures for these players to understand the importance of playing for Nigeria,” the official added.
