Information minister Lai Mohammed warns Boko Haram will begin targeting children

altINFORMATION minister Alhaji Lai Mohammed has warned that Boko Haram may now focus on recruiting children after the group it claims is its parent body Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Isis) has launched a new mobile application to attract them.

Tagged Huroof, the new application is designed by Isis to recruit and indoctrinate children for the purpose of furthering its jihadist cause. According to Alhaji Mohammed, the mobile application is to be used by Isis to teach children the Arabic alphabets with the aid of guns, military tanks and cannons.

Alhaji Mohammed said: “The application utilises colourful illustrations that attract and engage the attention of young children. Members of the public in general and parents in particular need to be vigilant and to prevent their children and wards from being indoctrinated."

In 2014, the Nigerian federal government issued a security alert that the Isis had employed the services of a South African to recruit fighters for it from West Africa. Shortly after the warning, a son of a prominent former chief justice of Nigeria was reported to have travelled to Syria in company with his two wives to fight for Isis.

He was, however, reportedly killed in Syria recently. Boko Haram has pledged its allegiance to Isis which also welcomed it to its fold, although so far, there is no evidence of Isis actually operating in Nigeria.
