LAGOS State Police Command has decided to clamp down on the incessant menace of corruption and unprofessional behaviour among its officers by sacking five of its men for unethical conduct.
In the first such clampdown of its kind, five policemen from different divisions have been arrested and dismissed by the command for various offences. They were identified as Michael Adeoye, Samuel Ando, Richard Ugwu, Daniel Osaimayu and Sulaiman Muhammed.
Fatai Owoseni, the Lagos State police commissioner, who confirmed the arrest and dismissal of the policemen, warned their colleagues in the state to shun unethical conducts. One of the officers, Sergeant Osaimayu, who was until his dismissal attached to the State Task Force on the Environment and Other Related Offences, was arrested for allegedly extorting N50,000 from an unnamed motorist.
Sergeant Osaimayu said: “I was at my duty in Oshodi when X-squad officials arrested me yesterday around 10.00am. A guy was arrested and during search, the money was found on him and the suspect confessed and pointed at me that I sent him.
“After I was arrested, I was brought to the X-Squad office in Ikeja where they searched me but no money was found on me. The police commissioner should please reconsider me as I have a family I cater for.”
Another of the dismissed cops, Adeoye, added: “I was coming down from inside Keke Marwa when I was arrested by X-Squad officers at Mile 12 Market on Monday. I went to the market and I am an orderly to an All Progressives Congress chairman at Kosofe.
“I went to the market to buy food for chickens I rear at home and was surprised when I was arrested. I was told by the police at the squad that I was arrested for improper dressing."
Ugwu said “I was arrested in Sabo, Yaba for improper dressing. I wore slippers because of the wounds I have on my leg and that is my offence as I am not into extortion.”
However, Mr Owoseni said they were arrested for mounting roadblocks which contravened the directives of the Inspector-General of Police across the country. It is not yet clear if the dismissed officers will have a right of appeal.
