NIGERIAN Baptist Convention president Dr Supo Ayokunle has been elected as the new president of the Christian Association of Nigeria (Can) to replace the controversial Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor at its annual convention yesterday.
In the run-up to the convention things were looking acrimonious as the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN) said it was considering pulling out of Can following the series of spats with legal action looming on several fronts. However, contrary to expectations, the convention went ahead smoothly with Dr Ayokunle elected president with 54 votes, defeating Professor Joseph Otubu of the Motailatu Church Cherubim and Seraphim Movement who got 28 votes.
Dr Ayokunle contested under the platform of the Christian Council of Nigeria, while Professor Otubu contested under the umbrella of the Organisation of African Instituted Churches. Outgoing Can president Pastor Oritsejafor, announced the election results to a rousing applause at the Ecumenical Centre in Abuja.
In line with Can's constitution, Pastor Oritsejafor will hand over to Dr Ayokunle in July. Out of the five blocs in Can, only the two were able to nominate representatives for the primaries conducted by its electoral college.
