Nigerian Communications Commission wins European Award for Best Practices

altTHE Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has won a European Award for Best Practices at the annual gala of the European Society for Quality Research (ESQR) at a recent ceremony in Brussels.

Coming less than 14 days after, the NCC was adjudged to be the Nigerian regulator of the year, it received another commendation in the Belgian capital at the event organised by the European Union affiliate. No fewer than 63 countries participated in the award ceremony out of which the NCC won the European Award for Best Practices 2016.

According to the organisers, the award which is the gold category is in recognition of the NCC's outstanding commitment, support and results in quality management strategies. At the event, the award was received by Tony Ojobo, the NCC's director of public affairs, on behalf of the executive vice chairman, Professor Umar Garba Danbatta.

Organisers said that over  recent years, the NCC’s management style, impact on the community that it serves and the professional way it carries out its regulatory activities in supervising a sector that contributes immensely to the gross domestic product (GDP) of Nigeria were some of the considerations for the award. They also referred to investors’ confidence in the Nigerian telecommunications sector as a result of the transparent regulatory activities of the NCC.

Until recently, the telecommunication sector only contributed 0.5% to Nigeria's GDP but this rose to 5% up from the 3.49% in the first quarter of 2016. Apart from the NCC, the European Award for Best Practice 2016 convention gave awards to selected organisations, public administrations and companies from Europe, Asia, the Americas, Africa and Australia in recognition of their outstanding commitment and results in quality management strategies.

Organisers said top companies, public administrations and organisations which excel in their services/products and continue to push the limits of quality with innovations received the European Award for Best Practices 2016 for their hard-work and achievements in the presence of the international business community. Their awards programmes take a comprehensive look at the initiatives and strategies that business leaders implement in their companies and organisations and recognise the efforts of exceptional and talented employers and employees and provide motivation for continuous progress.
