Fulani herdsman Saidu Buba arraigned before Port Harcourt Magistrates Court for murder

altDEPARTMENT of State Service (DSS) officials have arraigned Fulani herdsman Saidu Buba before a Magistrate’s Court in Port Harcourt for killing one Bright Iruanya in Abam community in Okrika Local Government Area of the state.

Over recent months, Fulani herdsmen have become a menace across Nigeria, attacking communities at random and leavings hundreds dead in their wake. Heavily armed with AK47 assault rifles, the herdsmen have been particularly brutal in Nigeria's Middle Belt where they have been known to burn down whole villages.

President Muhammadu Buhari, himself an ethnic Fulani, has come under fierce attack for not doing enough to address the problem caused by his kinsmen. In one of the first prosecutions of a herdsman, however, Mr Buba has been charged with shooting Mr Iruanya at Abam, on May 30 this year.

A DSS spokesman said in court: “Saidu Buba, adult with others still at large on or about the 30th day of May, 2016, at Abam, Okrika Local Government Area within the jurisdiction of this court did murder Bright Iruanya by shooting him to death with a gun and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 316 and punishable under section 319 of the criminal code law, laws of Rivers State of Nigeria, 1999.”
