Delta State University sacks six of its lecturers for sexually harassing female students

altDELTA State University (Delsu) Abraka has sacked six of its lecturers for their involvement in several offences including alleged sexual harassment of female students that has involved asking for favours in exchange for academic malpractices.

Over recent years, sexual harassment in Nigeria's tertiary institutions has become commonplace, with lecturers taking advantage of female students. Many young women have been denied passes in courses for their refusal to grant lecturers sexual favours, while tutors have been known to sit exams for female students.

In a bid to stamp out the menace, Delsu's governing council at its 97th regular meeting decided to sack the lecturers after a disciplinary committee set up to investigate the allegations against them recommended their dismissal. Investigations revealed that the sacked lecturers were also involved financial extortion for marks, leaking of examination questions and other corrupt offences.

While six were dismissed, four others were demoted and received various degrees of query for their gross misconducts. Delsu's public relations officer Eddy Agbure, confirmed the development, adding that the lecturers were found culpable of the allegations levelled against them.
