TEAM Nigeria has moved up to 12th in the Rio Paralympic medals table with four gold two silver and one bronze medals after picking up three more medals yesterday in powerlifting and athletics.
As of at yesterday morning, Nigeria sat in 16th place in the medals table with two gold and two silver medals after Paul Kehinde emerging tops in the 65kg men's category with a winning lift of 218kg and Esther Oyema also won silver in the women's 55kg powerlifting event. However, yesterday, this tally was added to when Lucy Ejike and Lauretta Onye won gold in the women's 61kg powerlifting and shotput respectively.
Nnamdi Innocent then picked up a bronze medal in the men's 72kg powerlifting event to bring the country's total medal tally to seven. Team Nigeria now has four gold, two silver and one bronze medals and is on course to beat its performance at the London Olympics where the team won 13 medals including six gold, five silver and two bronze medals.
Lucy Ejike, the Nigerian team captain, started off with a successful lift at 136kg, which then became a new Paralympic and world record. She then improved her record by lifting 138kg at her next attempt, before completing the quality outing with a massive lift of 142kg.
