44 Indigenous People of Biafra members arrested after 23 human skulls were found

MILITARY operatives have arrested 44 members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (Ipob) in connection with the discovery of 23 decomposing human skulls and a skeleton discovered during a raid on a camp in Cross River State.

Operatives of the military joint task force known as Operation Delta Safe, discovered the remains during raids on militant camps belonging to suspected members of the Bakassi Strike Force in Bakassi and Akpabuyo local government areas of Cross River State. Operation Delta Safe spokesman Lt Colonel Olaolu Dauda, said the camps located at Ikot Ene Idem, Abakpa and Ikang Inam communities in the Bakassi and Akpabuyo councils were destroyed yesterday.

He added that the 44 Ipob members were arrested during the inauguration of the Bayelsa State chapter of the group. They were apprehended at Lakeview Club, along Mabinton Estate, Okaka Road, while trying to disrupt public peace according to Col Dauda.

Col Dauda added: “In fulfilment of Operation Delta Safe’s mandate to rid the Niger Delta region of crude oil theft, sea robbery, all forms of criminality and protection of oil and gas facilities, on October 26, 2016, troops of Sector Four in Cross River State, acting on a tip-off, carried out raids of Ikot Ene Idem, Abakpa and Ikang Inam communities in the Bakassi and Akpabuyo local government areas. During the cordon-and-search operations, troops discovered four militant shrines with 23 human skulls in various stages of decomposition, a complete human skeleton and several other human body parts."

Pointing out that the shrines were destroyed, Col Dauda said troops are continuing to search for any other perpetrators of the murders. It is not yet clear if the 44 arrested Ipob members will be charged to court.
