100-Year-Old Woman Raped!

A 100-year-old woman was raped in her home early this week, Wichita police confirmed Friday.

The woman walked to a neighbor’s house at about 7:15 a.m. Tuesday and told the neighbor there were two people inside her house in the 800 block of South Crestway, Capt. Troy Livingston said.

“Officers arrived and determined that her house had been broken into,” Livingston said.

The woman said she was awakened in the middle of the night by the intruders inside her house.“There’s some confusion” on the part of the victim, likely because of her age, “but we’ve worked through that,” Livingston said.

Forensic medical testing confirmed she was sexually assaulted, he said. One or more burglars forced their way inside through a back door, but investigators are working with relatives to determine what, if any, property was taken.

“The place is very neat and tidy,” Livingston said.

The woman lives alone at the house, which is northwest of Lincoln and Oliver.

“We believe this was a burglary and the sexual assault was kind of a crime of opportunity,” he said.

Because of the victim’s confusion, police officials weren’t immediately sure what had happened, Livingston said. Officers have worked the case all along as if the burglary and rape did occur, however.

An extensive search of the surrounding neighborhood and interviews with nearby residents have taken place as police look for clues.
