A girl said to be about 10-years-old has been crushed to death on the Ugbowo-Lagos Expressway in Benin, the Edo state capital, by a hit-and-run driver.
The victim was said to have died on the spot.
According to an eyewitness at the scene, the girl was about to cross the other side of the road, when the driver of a Toyota camry in full speed hit her and sped off instantly to avoid being arrested.
“She wanted to cross to the other side of the road but she didn’t notice that a car was coming.
“As soon as she wanted to cross, the car, which was on top speed, hit her and she died instantly,” said the eyewitness.
The eyewitness blamed the trailers parked on the road as the cause of the accident saying it made it impossible for people who want to cross the road to see the other side.
“Those trailers that are parking along this very road are the ones causing most of the accidents.
“When somebody wants to cross the road, there is no way he can see the other side because the trailers park here and there.”
The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has since moved the body of the victim to a mortuary.
