Police deploy tanks, 6,000 personnel in Ekiti

The Police in Ekiti State have deployed personnel and Armoured Personnel Carriers in flash points in the state to forestall breakdown of law and order during Saturday’s elections.

No fewer than 6,000 police personnel have also been deployed to boost security and curb violence during and after the polls.

It will be recalled that the operation “Show of Force” launched by the Commissioner of Police in the state, Taiwo Lakanu, had moved round the state ahead of today’s polls.

The operation was launched in collaboration with the Department of State Security, Federal Road Safety Commission, National Drug and Law Enforcement Agency, Nigeria Prisons Service, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Nigeria Customs Service and the Nigeria Immigration Service.

According to Lakanu, the joint security team considers all the areas in the state as flash points. He said, “It is to show our level of preparedness for the election. We are going round to let people who may want to cause unnecessary violence know that we are ready for them.

“We are treating all the areas in the state as flash points because problems can emanate from anywhere. We have intervention units in all the senatorial districts as dictated by the Inspector General of Police.

“We are using everything in our armoury. We are using all the logistics to curtail activities of those planning evil. We are working with other sister agencies. We have enough men to cover the ground.”
