PRESIDENT-elect General Muhammadu Buhari has promised to prosecute the perpetrators of electoral violence in Rivers State during the recent elections pointing out that he will not forgive and forget the acts of those who committed arson and murder.
During Nigeria's last elections, Rivers State suffered some of the worst violence as supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) clashed. Several lives were lost and property destroyed as thugs were deployed to harass political opponents and snatch ballot boxes.
Speaking yesterday while receiving the Rivers State chapter of the APC in Abuja, General Buhari, said he owed the people a duty to ensure justice in the land, adding that every Nigerian deserved respect and dignity. He pointed out that his government will not tolerate an army within the army or a police within the police.
General Buhari said: “We will confront them with facts and figures. We will not forgive and we will not forget those who perpetrated killings and arson in Rivers State during the elections. At least this is the much we owe Nigerians.”
Gabriel Toby, the former Rivers State deputy governor, who led the delegation, said what happened during the presidential and the governorship elections was a coup, adding that it did not reflect the wishes of the people.
While pledging to support the incoming administration, he added that they were also in Abuja to plead with the president-elect not to forget the persecution and many sacrifices made by their son, Governor Rotimi Amaechi. Mr Toby asked General Buhari to duly compensate Governor Amaechi.
Members of the Delta and Benue State chapters of the APC also paid courtesy calls on General Buhari yesterday. General Buhari also played host to APC women leaders, led by Hajiya Ramatu Ali, during which he promised to include them in his government.
