Diezani books herself on to same flight as Buhari as he makes surprise trip to UK today

altEMBATTLED petroleum minister Diezani Alison-Madueke has hurriedly booked a flight to London in a bid to get the full attention of president-elect General Muhammadu Buhari who quietly sneaked out of the country this morning.

Due to arrive in the UK later today, General Buhari is travelling to London for the weekend and is expected back in Nigeria on Tuesday in time for the swearing-in ceremonies. His unscheduled trip was not announced and it is suspected that he is coming for a medical check-up.

Eager to get the general's ear Ms Alison-Madueke was said to have hurriedly booked a seat on the same flight as soon as she heard that he was visiting London.  Almost certain to be prosecuted for corruption when the government changes on May 29, Ms Alison-Madueke has been the subject of several indictments lately, including a missing $20bn of Nigeria's oil revenue.

Ms Alison-Madueke had been scheduled to travel to the UK next week Tuesday but upon learning that General Buhari was travelling to London, she asked the airline to book her on the same British Airways flight. While on the flight, she is expected to discuss directly with the president-elect and reach an accommodation that will spare her prosecution.

General Buhari had promised to open an investigation into the missing $20bn as it was too much a sum to turn a blind eye too. However, he has said that his government might offer an amnesty to public officials who confessed their crimes and returned looted public funds.

Both politicians are expected in London this evening as their British Airways flight departed from Abuja at 9am this morning. Several aides and close associates of General Buhari said they were surprised to learn of the trip since they were with him last night and he did not mention it.
