JIGAWA State governor Sule Lamido has become the first chief executive to leave office after he handed over the reins of power to the secretary to the state government and flew out of Nigeria to Saudi Arabia yesterday.
Ending his tenure of governor a week to the official end of his term, Governor Lamido handed over power to the secretary to the Jigawa State government Alhaji Abdu Babura and left the state for Abuja-Lagos en route Saudi-Arabia yesterday. He added that he was proceeding on his annual leave, so subsequently will not be returning to state house before the end of his tenure.
Speaking before he left, Governor Lamido pointed out that a debt profile of the state obtained from the joint sitting of the two transition committees was N14bn (£44.7m). He said the federal government owes the state N12bn (£38.3m) from the airport project executed by state government as they had an understanding and commitment that Abuja would reimburse Jigawa for money spent.
Two weeks ago, Governor Lamido said he committed about N17bn (£54.25m) of the state’s funds into the airport project with the hope that President Goodluck Jonathan, who promised during his visit to Jigawa in 2010 would reimburse the state. He added that so far, the federal government has only paid the state N5.8bn, leaving a balance of N12bn.
Governor Lamido also said that there were rollover projects worth N90bn (£287m) for which the state government had awarded contracts but had not made any payments to the contractors, adding that it was left for the incoming administration to continue or stop the projects. He pointed out that all political appointees would be in their offices until midnight of May 28, adding that statutory appointees would also stay till their tenures expire.
