PDP governors want Akwa Ibom's Akpabio removed as chairman of their forum

altPEOPLES Democratic Party (PDP) governors have begun mounting pressure on Akwa Ibom State governor Godswill Akpabio to stand down as the chairman if the PDP Governors Forum just as party chairman Alhaji Adamu Muazu did.

Following the last elections during which the PDP lost control of both the presidency and National Assembly as well as losing control of many of their states, party leaders have had to accept the blame. Alhaji Mu'azu and Chief Tony Anenih, the chairman of the PDP's board of trustees have both resigned recently for their role in the failure.

Governor Akpabio, is one of President Goodluck Jonathan's closest confidants and his fellow governors have asked that he too resign as a matter of urgency. Yesterday, several of the governors visited President Jonathan to push their case, particularly unhappy over Governor Akpabio’s refusal to call for a meeting of the PDP governors where salient decisions would have been taken in unison before the enlarged and general meeting of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF.)

Also, the governors complained that the NGF meeting should have been put on hold until after the swearing-in of the new governors to enable all of them participate in the election of their new chairman. Already, some of the governors have tipped Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State to take over from Governor Akpabio.

One source close to the governors, said: “The governors reported Governor Godswill Akpabio to the president that he must call for a meeting of PDP governors or be forced to resign. They are not happy with him that he attended the meeting where he sat close to Governor Rotimi Amaechi without letting other governors know the issues that had been on the ground.

Among other things, the governors are unhappy that Governor Akpabio played a fast one on the outgoing governors especially Liyel Imoke of Cross River and Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta as he was the only one who attended with his own governor- elect, Udom Emmanuel. They were also unhappy that the All Progressives Congress governors used the occasion to lambast finance minister Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, asking her to account for alleged $20bn from Nigeria's Excess Crude Account.
