SOUTH Africa's president Jacob Zuma has defied a threat by the National Association of Nigerian Students (Nans) and arrived in Abuja for the inauguration of President Muhammadu Buhari later this morning.
Last week, Nans warned President Zuma not to attend the inauguration of General Buhari on for failing to apologise for the recent xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa. Last month, irate South Africans carried out a series of violent xenophobic attacks against African migrants in the country, killing at least seven.
President Zuma apologised to Mozambique after at least one of its nationals was killed but so far, has not apologised to Nigeria. Although there is no record of any Nigerian being killed in the attacks, several Nigerian businesses were destroyed during the mayhem and it is not yet clear if the victims will be compensated.
Nans had threatened to storm the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, should President Zuma step into Nigeria. However, calling their bluff President Zuma has made it clear he will land in Abuja today for a working visit during which he will attend the inauguration and discuss issues of mutual concern with President Muhammadu Buhari.
A presidential spokesman said: "President Zuma will be fulfilling his presidential duties in Nigeria such as enhancing the good bilateral relations between the two countries, and strengthening economic ties. He has already congratulated the people of Nigeria for conducting a peaceful, transparent, credible, free and fair election as declared by the Independent National Election Commission."
President Zuma will be accompanied on his trip by Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, South Africa's minister of international relations and co-operation. It is not yet clear if Nans intends to carry out its threat to picket the airport when President Zuma arrives.
