BAUCHI 40-year old man Ibrahim Idris has been sentenced to death by hanging by a state high court for killing a six-year-old girl during an ill-fated and gruesome attempt to rape her.
Delivering judgement in the horrific case yesterday, Justice Yelim Bogoro, the presiding judge of the Bauchi State High Court said the confessional statement of the accused was direct and held that the prosecution had proved his case. Mr Idris was dragged to court by the state director of public prosecution, Dawud Yakubu, who charged him for culpable homicide contrary to section 221 of the penal code.
Mr Dawud told the court that on September 14, 2012, the accused called the deceased, six-year-old Asiya Mohammed, in to his room with the intention to rape her and when she refused, he used his knife and cut her throat. He then put her head in a bag and threw it into a water channel.
According to the prosecution, the body of the deceased was recovered and taken to the General Hospital Darazo for post-mortem, before it was handed over to her parents for burial. Mr Dawud called five witnesses and presented the axe and knife that the accused used to cut her throat of the deceased as exhibits.
In her judgment, Justice Bogoro said: “I hereby sentence you to death to be hanged by the neck till you die.” She added that the convict has the right to appeal the judgement within 30 days.
