FORMER petroleum minister Diezani Alison-Madueke is undergoing treatment for breast cancer at a private London hospital and is unlikely to return to Nigeria soon as she has been receiving daily therapy for the last fortnight.
Ms Alison-Madueke left Nigeria on May 23, 2015 on a British Airways flight on which the then president-elect Muhammad Buhari was also travelling. During the six hour flight, President Buhari refused to grant Ms Alison-Madueke an audience as it was believed she hurriedly booked herself on it so she could negotiate a soft landing for herself in the event of a probe of her ministry.
Nigeria's petroleum ministry and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation under Ms Alison-Madueke, has been the subject of several indictments for corruption, including an allegation that $18.5bn was misspent. Renown for her flamboyant lifestyle, the minister regularly hired private jets to fly her all around the world at the expense of the Nigerian treasury.
It was believed that she fled to London to escape prosecution from the Buhari administration but family members say she is undergoing a new round of treatment for breast cancer. According to her family, the immediate past minister is currently in a hospital in London where she started a fresh round of therapy on Friday and the daily therapy will last for one week.
Ms Alison-Madueke has not returned to Nigeria since leaving the country on May 23 with President Buhari and it is not clear when she will. Our source disclosed that she underwent surgery last year to remove tumours from her breast and the current treatment is a continuation of the process.
So far, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is yet to bring any formal charges against Ms Alison-Madueke, although President Buhari has said he will investigate the missing $20bn under her watch. Owing to the pervasive corruption in the oil sector, President Buhari has indicated that he would personally run the petroleum ministry.
