EKITI State governor Ayo Fayose has escaped impeachment proceedings following the tenure expiration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) state house of assembly whose term in office ended yesterday.
Since assuming office in November last year, Governor Fayose has been at loggerheads with the assembly, refusing to recognise its leaders and declaring war on the 19 APC members. However, following the election of General Muhammadu Buhari as Nigeria's president on March 28, the 19 APC legislators in the house decided to commence impeachment proceedings against the governor.
They subsequently served the governor and his deputy Kolapo Olusola with impeachment notices for various offences. These include invasion of the house with thugs and miscreants, instigating an unconstitutional takeover of the house by seven legislators in contravention of Section 96(2) of the constitution, the prevention of the 19 APC members from performing legislative duties with the use of security agents and armed thugs and sponsoring an unlawful impeachment process.
Over recent weeks, Ado-Ekiti, the state capital has been tense as Governor Fayose has used thugs and interest groups to blockade the Ekiti State House of Assembly to prevent the lawmakers from sitting and pursuing the charges against him. He got a reprieve yesterday when their tenure expired and the new house, made up of People's Democratic Party (PDP) members was initiated.
Governor Fayose has called out his supporters to rejoice with him on the streets today over the expiration of the term of the APC lawmakers, saying he now has an opportunity to get into the act of governance. The new Ekiti State House of Assembly is entirely dominated by Governor Fayose’s PDP members, who were elected during the April 11 elections.
Governor Fayose said: “I want to thank the PDP members, commercial drivers and motorcyclists, market men and women and citizens of this state for their continued support for me while the face-off lasted. With the expiration of their tenure, there is relief for me and my administration and it is now time to perform my duties as governor of the state."
PDP members-elect in the House of Representatives have counselled the 19 APC members in the Ekiti State House of Assembly to seek God’s forgiveness for their failed moves against Governor Fayose. In the statement signed by six PDP members-elect Ayo Oladimeji, Segun Adekola, Akin Awodumila, Olamide Oni, Thaddeus Aina and Kehinde Agboola, the APC lawmakers were told that if former President Goodluck Jonathan had behaved the way they did, Nigeria would be in crisis by now.
