Iconic Hausa musician Danmaraya Jos dies and is buried according to Muslim rites

altICONIC musical legend Adamu Wayya popularly known as Danmaraya Jos has been buried in the Plateau State capital Jos today after passing away early this morning following a protracted illness.

 

One of the pioneers of Nigerian music and the most well known northern musician in the 1970s and 1980s, Danmaraya, 69, performed as recently as this year. His close friend and associate, Ladan Salihu, revealed that the musician was buried today in Jos according to Muslim rites.

 

Mr Salihu said: "One of Nigeria’s foremost Hausa musicians, poet, philosopher and philanthropist, Dr Adamu Danmaraya Jos has answered Allah’s call. He died in Jos after a protracted illness.

 

"When I visited him two weeks ago, he spoke passionately about the unity of the north and of one Nigeria. I remember when he insisted that my late father gave out his adopted daughter’s hand in marriage some 15 years ago."

 

Currently, the director-general of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, Mr Salihu added that Danmaraya was a recipient of the national honours MON and OON and also of a United Nations Peace Medal. Danmaraya's last known public performance was at the Peoples Democratic Party’s fund raising dinner in Abuja before the 2015 general election.
