FORMER Imo State governor Ikedi Ohakim faces the prospect of being arrested after failing to honour an invitation to appear before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to respond to corruption charges against him.
Governor Ohakim governed Imo State between 2007 and 2011 and a petition has been filed against him alleging that his mismanaged funds during his tenure. Acting on the petition, the EFCC summoned him to visit its Abuja offices but he failed to show up yesterday, so may be arrested.
Since President Muhammadu Buhari was elected on March 28, the EFCC has stepped up its pursuit of public officials accused of financial crimes in line with his pledge to cleanse Nigeria of corruption. Yesterday, apart from Governor Ohakim, Martin Elechi, the former governor of Ebonyi State was also invited to the EFCC's offices for questioning.
Governor Elechi was grilled for the second day running by EFCC operatives over allegations of misappropriation of funds by his government. He left the commission around 4.30pm yesterday afternoon and is expected to visit there again next week.
EFCC spokesman Wilson Uwujaren, confirmed that Governor Elechi was interrogated, adding that he might be needed for further questioning next week. He stated that Governor Ohakim was expected to shed more light on issues in an old case being investigated by the anti-agency.
Mr Uwujaren said: “We were expecting a former governor of Imo State, Ihedi Ohakim, today, to come and shed light on some issues in an old case we have been investigating. We are about rounding off the investigation and we need him to clarify some issues but he didn’t show up, he may still come today or tomorrow.
“Elechi was at our office today in continuation of the questioning on some issues we are investigating. He came in the morning and was released later but we are expecting him again next week.”
Since President Buhari assumed office, the former governors of Adamawa and Borno States Murtala Nyako and Ali Modu Sherrif have all been questioned by the EFCC. Also, former inspector general of police Mike Okiro has been invited for questioning and the ex governor of Bayelsa State Timipre Sylva has had legal charges filed against him.
