Under Nigeria's delicate zoning formula, each of the geo-political zones gets one of the top six offices but as thing stand, the south-south has got nothing. President Buhari is from the northwest, his deputy Professor Yemi Osinbajo is from the southwest, senate president Bukola Saraki is from the north central zone, while his deputy Ike Ekweremadu is from the southeast.
In the House of Representatives, speaker Yakubu Dogara is from the northeast, while his deputy Yusuf Lasun is from the southwest. At the moment, the APC is trying to fill all the other principal offices on the National Assembly and there is little mention of the south-south, in total abrogation of the zoning principle.
Exasperated with the situation, the Abuja chapter of the South-South Community has decried in strong terms the outright the marginalisation of the geo-political zone in the appointments. Former Federal Capital Territory police commissioner Lawrence Alobi, the president of the group, expressed concern over the lopsidedness of appointments made so far.
Mr Alobi said: “While the president is free to stick with the best individuals with cerebral potential, the present outlook of leadership at the federal level as reflected is with seeming national spread except that the south-south is yet to be integrated.”
He maintained that it would be in the best interest of the nation if south-south is also considered in the leadership hierarchy of appointment at the federal level. The group further stressed that the allocation of the Office of the Secretary to the Federation to the zone will lend credence to the aspirations of the APC leg government, as a party that adheres to the tenets of justice, fairness, equity and national unity.
