ABIA State lawmaker in the House of Representatives Hon Ossy Prestige has promised to send up to 50 students from his constituency to any country of their choice for their degrees and masters programmes.
In the first such offer of its kind, Hon Prestige, representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, said that the scholarship would be for residents of Aba North and South irrespective of their state or local government of origin. A first-time lawmaker elected on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Hon Presitge made this pledge during a thank you reception organised at the Aba Sports Club.
Although he did not say whether the students were going to go in batches or at once, Hon Prestige said that the essence of the scholarship programme is to assist students who have the desire to study overseas but lack the financial muscle to achieve it. A former chairman of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents, Onne Seaport chapter, Hon Prestige added that he would also assist qualified youth to secure employment in the federal civil service and other establishments through his contacts as a lawmaker and businessman.
Responding to Hon Prestige’s promise, Kelechi Okoroafo, of the Aba North and South constituency said it was a welcome development and expressed hope that the process would not be hijacked. He added: “The need for this his promise for us, his constituents cannot be over emphasised, especially as school fees to study in Nigeria and abroad are way too high.
“Our fear, however, is that many people close to him might demand to benefit from the largess even when they did not work for or believe that he would win the election. We stood our grounds and our votes counted, so he let him supervise the exercise to make sure that it will be hijacked by anyone.”
