MEMBERS of the former government of Bauchi State have filed a suit against the new government seeking to restrain the committee it has set up from impounding their property alleged to have been acquired illegally.
In May 29, Governor Isa Yaguda of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) handed over to Governor Mohammed Abubakar of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Since the handover, there has been a lot of bad blood between the two sides, the APC government accusing its predecessors of massive corruption.
Already, the government of Governor Abubakar has seized 22 vehicles from the wives of the immediate past Governor Isa Yuguda as part of a clampdown of corruption in the state. In addition, the new government has established the Bauchi State Transition Committee, headed by Senator Mohammed Mohammed and a recovery committee who have been tasked with seizing all illegally acquired property.
In response to the committee's actions about 35 aides and officials of Governor Yuguda, have filed a law suit aimed at restraining it from further seizures. Defendants in the suit include the Bauchi State attorney-general, the chairman of the recovery committee and his secretary, the state commissioner of police and the director of the State Security Service.
Mukhtar Abubakar, the former Bauchi State attorney-general and commissioner of justice, who filed the suit, asked the court to restrain the defendants from arresting and seizing the defendants’ property or doing anything capable of violating the applicants’ rights pending the determination of the motion on notice. He asked the court to restrain the respondents from taking further steps and maintain the status quo pending the determination and hearing of the motion on notice.
Presiding judge Mohammed Umar, ordered the defendants to, within three days from the service - July 2, show why the prayers of the applicants should not be granted. He then adjourned the suit for further hearing.
