MEMBERS of the Muslim Students Society of Nigeria (MSSN) have attacked the West African Examinations Council (Waec) for fixing some of its papers at times that clash with their Jumat prayers.
In a first such incident of its kind, the MSSN has faulted the timing of some subjects of Wace's examinations for the October/November General Certificate of Education. Alhaji Mushafau Alaran, the zonal coordinator of the group in the southern states, said the timetable placed some subjects at a period when Muslims would be observing Jumat prayers.
He added that the Waec timetable shows that on October 11, the Forestry Essay paper holds between 1pm and 3pm, while on October 18, Government Essay paper also falls on the same time. According to Alhaji Alaran, other papers which will take place during prayer times include
Further Mathematics, Applied Electricity Two and Applied Electricity One.
Alhaji Alaran added that the MSSN considered this a deliberate act which translates to taking Muslims for granted and disrespect for the religion. He demanded an apology from Waec and an adjustment of the timetable.
“It should be noted that Jumat prayer is an obligation that all Muslims must observe,” Alhaji Alaran added.
