Dangote to pay 15 science professors at Kano University of Science and Technology

altAFRICA'S richest man Alhaji Aliko Dangote has pledged to pay the salaries of15 science professors at the Kano University of Science and Technology (Kust) for four years as part of an ambitious plan to regenerate the state's economy.

 

A native of Kano State himself, Alhaji Dangote is keen to boost the local economy through technological innovation but is aware that to kick-start the process, people need to be trained first.  Speaking at the15- year anniversary of the university, Kust vice chancellor Professor Shehu Alhaji Musa added that the business mogul has also promised to construct houses for the lecturers.


According to the vice chancellor, the university is currently undergoing serious improvement in all spheres as part of its quest to become an international acclaimed university. He added that capital projects worth N8bn (£26m) are either completed, ongoing or at an early stage of development, being financed by individuals, Tetfund sponsored projects and the state government.


Professor Musa said that the university is in collaboration with various stakeholders from within and outside Nigeria in view of making it the best among equals. He explained that the university has made huge progress over the last 18 months and that has been achieved with the support of his dedicated academic and non- academic staff.

 

Alhaji Dangote has food production at the core of his business empire, with sugar being one of his major areas of operation. Over the last year, Dangote Industries has stepped up its opening of processing factories and assistance to farmers in a bid to dramatically increase output.

 

Valued at about $15bn by Forbes Magazine, Alhaji Dangote has said that he would not want to be known as the richest man alone, adding that he would lend his voice to better the lots of Nigerians. He noted that government was taking measures to diversify the economy by promoting the local production of essential commodities, which he said would enhance the growth of the economy with regards to job creation and help preserve scarce foreign exchange.
