Hajiya Buhari asks Adamawa governor to remove Alhaji Tola as women's commissioner

altPRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari's wife Hajiya Aisha Buhari has intervened in the politics of her native Adamawa State by asking Governor Bindow Jibrilla to swap his male commissioner for women affairs Alhaji Aliyu Tola with a woman.

Earlier this month, Governor Jibrilla named Alhaji Tola as his commissioner for women affairs to the chagrin of women's rights groups who said the appointment was weird and bizarre. Since then, there have been calls for him to rescind the decision and look for a suitable qualified woman to take up the position.

With such calls growing, Hajiya Buhari has joined the fray, pointing out that women in the state were protesting the appointment of a man as a women's affairs commissioner. She made the call in Yola, the state capital, yesterday, while inaugurating a free medical check-up for 2,000 women under her pet project, the Aisha Buhari Women Health Initiative.

Hajiya Buhari said: “The women are protesting. They asked me to pass their wishes to have a woman as their commissioner for women affairs.”

Alhaji Tola, who was asked to deliver his speech before that of the wife of the president, seemed to have sensed the women’s countenance. Taking a back seat, he tactically uttered a few words before inviting the permanent secretary of the ministry, Hajiya Maisaratu Bello, a woman, to address the gathering.

Those against Alhaji Tola's appointment argued that the ministry was meant to carry women along hence the need to make it exclusively for them, while those in support of it said the full name of the ministry is Adamawa State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, making it open for both males and females. There are four female commissioners in Adamawa State including Dr Fatima Atiku Abubakar (Health), Barrister Lilian Kayode (Works), Mrs Victoria Sashi (Mineral Resources) and Dr Kaleptawa Farauta (Education).
