EUROPEAN intelligence agencies have suggested that Israeli foreign intelligence agency Mossad may have perpetuated the recent stampede in Saudi Arabia to enable it abduct visiting Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) commanders.
Last week, over 1,000 people died during a stampede near Mecca while performing the annual hajj pilgrimage. At least 64 Nigerians are believed to be among the dead in what is the worst religious accident in the holy land ever.
According to an unverified report published by the al-Nahrain-net news agency, European intelligence agencies indicates that the Mossad planned the accident so it could abduct a number of IRGC commanders, diplomats and prominent officials. Israel has been threatening action against Iran lately over Tehran's nuclear programme which it claims will allow the Arab nation to develop weapons of mass destruction.
President Barack Obama recently brokered a deal that would allow Iran to develop nuclear energy to generate electricity but preclude it from manufacturing weapons. However, Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has opposed the deal, calling it a fudge and a dangerous compromise.
Al-Nahrain-net added that it also obtained information on Israeli involvement in the accident from European diplomatic sources in Brussels. It added that the deadly crush was in fact a joint, pre-planned sabotage operation designed to facilitate the kidnapping of a number of high-ranking IRGC commanders and Iranian diplomats.
According to Al-Nahrain-net, preliminary intelligence reports indicate that Saudi and Israeli intelligence agencies collaborated in the plot together. Apparently, the former Iranian ambassador to Lebanon, Ghazanfar Roknabadi, is believed to have been kidnapped during the deadly stampede.
Mr Roknabadi is considered an eminent member of Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah al-Khamenei's office staff and a figure who is well-informed regarding the secrets of the Hizbullah missile armament by Tehran. Ali Asghar Fouladgar, the head of institute for IRGC strategic studies is also identified as missing as are Hussein Danesh, Fo'ad Mashghali, Ammar Miransari and Seyyed Hasan Hasani, who are all members of the Ayatollah's staff.
Although European Union diplomats have rejected the authenticity of this report, there is rising speculation that Russia leaked this information to western intelligence agencies. Al-Nahrain-net added that Iranian officials neither confirmed nor rejected the allegations regarding the abduction of Mr Roknabadi and other IRGC commanders during the hajj rituals.
If this report is accurate, it will signify a high level of intelligence coordination between Riyadh and Tel Aviv as it will be almost impossible for Israel to carry out the abduction of Iranian targets without Saudi blessing and acquiescence. Saudi authorities have buried the 64 Nigerian dead that have been identified so far.
