CALLS for President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe to stand down have intensified over the last 24 hours after the 91-year old read out the wrong speech at the opening of a new session of parliament yesterday.
President Mugabe has been the country's sole ruler since it gained independence in 1980 and has blatantly refused to step down, even after losing elections. As he gets older though, the president is increasingly raising eyebrows as both his physical fitness and his mental alertness are being questioned on a daily basis.
Yesterday, President Mugabe repeating an address he gave to the legislature last month, bringing about calls for him to stand down. President Mugabe read the 25-minute speech through to the end, apparently unaware that he was delivering the same text he presented during his state of the nation address last month.
Presidential spokesman George Charamba, said: “There has been a mix-up of speeches resulting in a situation where the president delivered the wrong speech. The mix-up happened in his secretarial office and the error is sincerely regretted and corrective measures are being considered.”
Africa’s oldest leader, President Mugabe fell down the steps leading from a podium earlier this year. Opposition party the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), has called on President Mugabe to resign over the blunder, saying it showed that he is too old to govern.
MDC spokesman Obert Gutu, said: “This clearly goes to show that Robert Mugabe no longer has the requisite mental faculties that are needed for him to continue in office as the head of state. The MDC would like to call upon Robert Mugabe to immediately tender his resignation as the president of Zimbabwe.”
He added that President Mugabe is way past his prime when he failed to recognise that he was reading the wrong speech in parliament. According to Mr Gutu, this is a sure sign of senility and grossly failing mental and physical health.
