Olu Falae's kidnappers demand massive ransom of N100m before they set him free

altKIDNAPPERS who abducted former finance minister and secretary to the federal government Chief Olu Falae at his farm near Akure yesterday have demanded a ransom of N100m (£320,000)  to free him.

Chief Falae, who turned 77 yesterday, was kidnapped from his farm in Ilado village, about 15 kilometres from his home in Akure, the Ondo State capital. It is believed that those who kidnapped him were Fulani herdsmen although the police dio not yet know where he is being held.

Apparently, the abductors, who attacked the over 200 workers on Chief Falae's farm, contacted his wife, Rachael, demanding N100mi within the next 24 hours. According to the police, Chief Falae had been having a running battle with Fulani herdsmen on his farm before yesterday’s incident.

According to some sources, Chief Falae received a call that herdsmen had again invaded his farm yesterday morning and he immediately rushed there, where he was attacked and whisked away. Ondo State Police Command spokesman Wole Ogodo, said they have since deployed 50 riot policemen, led by the deputy commissioner of operations, Ishola Abdulahi, to Chief Falae’s farm.

Mr Ogodo said: “For now, I cannot conclusively say whether it is kidnapping or not but what we learnt from his chief security officer is that the Fulani herdsmen came to attack them on the farm. Before now, they have been having a running battle over the grazing on his farm and there was a time he reported them and two of them were arrested and brought to the police command, where they made an undertaking.

“So they came today and launched an attack during which two of the workers were injured and others fled into the bush and we were told that Baba was whisked away. Immediately we were alerted, 50 policemen were deployed.”

Ondo State information commissioner Kayode Akinmade, said an urgent security meeting had been summoned. He assured the family members that the government will do everything possible to ensure Chief Falae is rescued alive.
