Saraki wins vote of confidence and declares Buhari's nominees will be thoroughly screened

altSENATE president Bukola Saraki has bounced back from winning a much-needed vote of confidence by declaring that President Muhammadu Buhari's list of ministerial nominees will be thoroughly screened before being approved.

Embattled Senator Saraki is facing the prospect of being convicted for false asset declaration as he has an impending case before the Code of Conduct Bureau. Bailed to return to the tribunal at a latter date in the ongoing case, Senator Saraki is also facing the prospect of being impeached and his party the All Progressives Congress (APC) is already looking at replacement candidates as senate president.

However, in a big reprieve yesterday, 83 out of Nigeria's 109 senators signed a motion of confidence in Senator Saraki, indicating that he is still popular with his colleagues. A relieved Senator Saraki said that with that out of the way, he now looks forward to receiving President Buhari's list of ministerial nominees and screening them.

Senator Saraki said: “As we await the list of ministerial nominees this week, I believe the presence of ministers will create the space for greater policy engagement with the executive arm of government. This will enable us to begin to respond in a more systematic manner to the various economic and social challenges before us, especially through our various committees that will also be constituted soon.

“On this note, I want to urge you all my colleagues to ensure that what is uppermost in our minds as we begin the constitutional task of screening of ministerial nominees is the overall interest of our country, informed by the enormity and the urgency of the challenges before us. Once the list is submitted, let us ensure that we treat it with dispatch and thoroughness as we must not be held down by unnecessary politicking."

Senator Saraki is facing a 13-count criminal charge at the Code of Conduct Tribunal over alleged false declaration of assets and operation of a foreign account while he was Kwara State governor. However, senators passed the vote of confidence on its leaders when a motion to that effect was moved by Senator David Umaru (APC, Niger East).

In moving the motion, Senator Umaru alleged that forces outside the senate were interfering in its internal affairs. His motion was seconded by Senator Ahmed Sani Yarima (APC, Zamfara West).
