Security operatives cart away large sums of hard currency from Uyo Government House

altANTI-corruption officials have revealed that they uncovered large sums of US dollars and British pounds sterling which have been carted away following their recent raid on the Akwa Ibom Government House in Uyo.

Yesterday, a combined team of operatives from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) stormed the Government House in Uyo. Although new governor Udom Emmanuel is yet to move into the premises, former governor Godswill Akpabio is said to still live on the premises in a posh guest house known as the presidential lodge.

Already, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which controls Akwa Ibom State has condemned the raid, saying the ruling  All Progressives Congress (APC) was plotting a forceful take-over of states it does not control. Ekiti State's Governor Ayo Fayose, said the invasion was a violation of the sanctity of the place and politicisation of security  in the country by the Department of State Security (DSS).

It is believed that upon their arrival, the DSS team went straight to the presidential lodge located within the premises and broke the metal door of a mini bank built in the building. Apparently, the team then dragged out bags of money suspected to be of hard, thought to belong to former governor Godswill Akpabio, who has left office, he was still in-charge of the presidential lodge.

PDP acting chairman Chief Uche Secondus, said the party was alerting the nation and the international community about the alleged plot of the APC  to forcefully take Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Abia and Taraba States because it could not win them at the last elections. He added that a situation whereby security agencies consistently assaulted states controlled by the PDP was unacceptable.

Chief Secondus said: "Let me alert the nation that there was a civilian coup d'état in Akwa Ibom State where the DSS under the leadership of Lawan Daura invaded the Government House and ransacked the entire building looking for the governor to kidnap. Again we want to alert  this nation that it is part of the strategy of the APC and its administration to forcefully take Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Abia and Taraba states because they are not satisfied with taking over the federal government and they want to now take over all the states controlled by the PDP.

"We want the international community to be aware of the situation. Is this how PDP ruled during its days? No."

Governor Fayose lamented the politicisation of the security services under President Muhammadu Buhari, adding that Mr Daura was acting in a manner that could portray Nigeria as  operating military government. He described this as dangerous and inimical to the country’s democratic growth and subsequently called for the sacking of the DSS director-general.
