Amaechi visits Saraki in bid to secure easy clearance from senators as screening starts

altFORMER Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi has visited senate president Bukola Saraki where it is believed that the two men discussed the forthcoming screening of President Muhammadu Buhari's ministerial nominees.

On Tuesday, the senate will begin screening the list of 21 nominees that President Buhari has submitted and Governor Amaechi is expected to come in for a rough ride. Already the subject of a petition submitted by the three People's Democratic Party (PDP) senators from Rivers State, Governor Amaechi is seen as the leading hate figure by the opposition.

Due to the bitter rancour that characterised the elections in Rivers State, the PDP has vowed to stop Governor Amaechi from being appointed as a minister. Already, his successor Governor Nyesom Wike has set up a judicial panel of enquiry to probe Governor Amaechi's tenure and the Rivers State chapter of the PDP has called for the former to be prosecuted for corruption.

Earlier this week, Governor Amaechi visited senator Saraki and according to several sources, he begged the senate president to help clear him ahead of the ministerial screening. Ministerial nominees have intensified their lobbying for the senate’s clearance over the last week since the release of their names by President Buhari.

One source said this would be the first time Governor Amaechi would be visiting Senator Saraki since he was elected senate president. Apparently, hitherto, he had stayed away and even worked against the Senate president’s emergence which was against their party's stand.

According to the source, Governor Amaechi who drove himself to the residence in company of an aide pleaded with the senate president to forget the past and help clear him. He revealed that Governor Amaechi succeeded in extracting a promise from Senator Saraki that he would do everything possible to make his clearance easy.
