SUPER Eagles striker Brown Ideye has expressed his delight at scoring his first Uefa Champions League goal for his new clubside Olympiakos of Greece when he clinched the winner in their 1-0 victory over Croatia's Dinamo Zagreb.
Ideye, 27, joined English Premier League side West Bromwich Albion in July 2014 from Dynamo Kiev in the Ukraine for a club record-breaking fee of £10m. While in England, however, Ideye had a difficult time at West Brom, scoring just twice with limited playing time in 13 appearances and subsequently left last summer for Olympiakos.
Drawn in the same group as Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Dinamo Zagreb, Olympiakos are hoping to qualify for the knock-out phase of the tournament despite the tough opposition. Thanks to Ideye's goal on Tuesday, the club now site in second place with six points and is hopeful.
After the match Ideye took to Twitter to celebrate the victory, which came from his 79th-minute superb finish from a tight angle. Earlier in the game, Ideye had missed a clear chance in the second half when he shot wide in the front of an empty net.
Ideye said: “Massive win tonight and the team worked very hard. We made sure that we would win the game and this victory keeps us on course for qualification.
"I scored a very difficult one, It’s unbelievable. “We are halfway there but with three more games to play everybody can win or lose a game in this group as proved today, so we have to show the same level of attention and dedication in the remaining matches.”
Olympiakos have six points after three games, same as Bayern Munich, who are top of Group F. Dinamo Zagreb and Arsenal have three points each but with three matches still to play, the group is too close to call.
On the same night, Arsenal beat Bayern Munich 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium in London. Ideye, who has not plaued for Nigeria for over a year now, will hope that his recent form will earn him a recall from Super eagles coach Sunday Oliseh
